The Veterinary Council of Ireland

The Veterinary Council of Ireland (“VCI”) is an independent Statutory Body established under the Veterinary Practice Act 2005, as amended. The principal function of the VCI is to regulate the practise of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing in Ireland, in the interest of animal health and welfare, and public health.

The Role of the Council

The VCI acts in the public interest, as an independent statutory body promoting optimal animal health, food safety and supporting sustainability in line with the principles of One Health, One Welfare.

Committees and Working Groups

Much of the preparatory work is entrusted to committees of the VCI. The VCI may establish Committees, other than the Preliminary Investigations Committee, the Fitness to Practice Committee and the Education Committee, to perform specified functions of the VCI.

Past Presidents

The VCI was originally established under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1931, with its first president being appointed.
